My favorite form of travel is to walk cities on foot, wandering in and out of neighborhoods commercial and residential. I’m not nearly as interested in cultural attractions as I am by restaurants, shops, parks, homes, and street life. I especially seek out districts famous for street art, and I’m always looking for the odd piece in an unexpected place.

While I love a good mural, carefully conceived and executed, my favorite finds are layered works that come together in surprising ways. I look for papers plastered on stone, wood, metal, or other papers, torn and marked with pen and paint, then peeled and aged and marked again. These engender in me a sense of movement through time, and of text upon text, more like a conversation than a static work. T

he beauty of graffiti is in its ephemeral nature—we catch it in this single moment of time and at our next passage it will already have changed. Older street art that has integrated into a neighborhood is far more interesting than a new piece, however striking or well-designed. That’s what I’m looking to capture in these photos—the sense of a moment passing, soon gone.
